Arnhem Land

Today we had a super busy day.  We first we went into the information centre to get a permit to go into Arnhem Land.  We had to get a permit because it is Aboriginal Land.  Then we crossed the crossing where we saw the crocodiles yesterday.

We crossed into Arnhem Land which was really really pretty.  We stopped at the first town called Gunbalanya at the Art Gallery called Injalak.  When we arrived we went around to the Workshop to have a look at the Indigenous Artists painting.  They told us about how they make their paints which on special occasions includes using their own blood.  We watched them paint on bark, turtle shells and fabric.  Then we went into the Screen Painting Workshop and watched them print beautiful patterns on to the fabric.  Then we went into the store to have a look around and bought some artwork.  We then went outside again and had look at the stunning surroundings with the hundreds of pelicans, its bright green grass and the towering cliffs.

After we crossed the river we went to do a walk with a ranger around some Aboriginal Rock Art and we learnt about how old and what the paintings are and the stories behind them.  Then we had lunch while we watched the crocs snatch at the fish again.  Then we went and did some paintings with 2 Aboriginal men called Larry and Tony.  I painted a black background and a white person with a spear pointed towards the birds in the sky.  We enjoyed painting and Tony and Larry’s paintings were amazing.
